Who we are
This policy explains how Mark M. McCormick, CPA (“we,” “us”) collects, uses and protects information through markmccormickcpa.com and in the course of providing accounting, bookkeeping, tax and CFO services. Information we collect
- Information you send us. When you use our contact form we collect your name, email address, company name and the message you type. When you email or call us, we keep that correspondence.
- Newsletter. When you subscribe to our monthly newsletter we collect your email address and, if you choose to give them, your first name, company and type of business. We use them only to send the newsletter and related updates.
- Scheduling. When you book a call through Calendly, Calendly collects your name, email and any answers you provide, and shares them with us. Calendly's own privacy policy also applies.
- Client information. If you become a client, we receive financial records, bank and accounting data, payroll information, tax documents and identification numbers needed to do the work. Clients send these through our Secure Document Upload page rather than ordinary email.
- Website data. Like most websites, our host may record basic technical data such as IP address, browser type and pages visited, for security and to keep the site running. We do not sell this data or use it for third-party advertising.
How we use it
- To answer your questions, schedule calls and prepare proposals.
- To perform the services you engage us for, including bookkeeping, tax preparation, compilations and financial reporting.
- To send our monthly newsletter to people who subscribe, and occasional business emails such as practice updates or introductions. Every marketing email identifies us, includes our mailing address and has an unsubscribe link.
- To meet our legal, regulatory and professional obligations.
Professional confidentiality
As a licensed CPA, we are bound by professional confidentiality rules, including the California Board of Accountancy's regulations and the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct. We do not disclose confidential client information without your consent, except as required by law, regulation, subpoena or professional peer review. Tax return information is also protected by federal law (Internal Revenue Code sections 6713 and 7216) and is used or disclosed only as those rules allow.
Who we share it with
We do not sell or rent personal information. We share it only as needed to provide our services:
- Service providers that support our work, such as our secure client portal, accounting and tax software, payroll platforms, scheduling (Calendly), email and payment processors. They may use the information only to provide services to us.
- Staff and contractors, who are bound by confidentiality agreements. Some may be located outside the United States. We will not disclose your tax return information to anyone outside the United States without your prior written consent, as federal rules require.
- Government agencies, such as the IRS and state tax departments, when filing on your behalf or when required by law.
- Others you authorize, such as your banker, attorney or investors.
How we protect it
We maintain a written information security program consistent with the FTC Safeguards Rule and IRS guidance for tax professionals. Safeguards include encrypted client portal file transfer, multi-factor authentication, access limited to people who need it, and secure disposal of records we no longer need. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
How long we keep it
We keep client records for as long as needed to provide services and to meet legal and professional retention requirements, generally at least seven years after the work is completed. Inquiries from people who do not become clients are deleted when no longer needed.
Your choices and rights
- You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, subject to the records we must keep by law or professional rules.
- You can unsubscribe from the newsletter or from all marketing emails at any time on our Email Preferences page, with the unsubscribe link in any email, by replying "unsubscribe," or by writing to mark@markmccormickcpa.com. We honor opt-out requests within 10 business days, never charge a fee or ask for more than your email address to opt out, and do not sell or transfer your email address after you opt out. Opting out does not stop service emails we send to clients about their engagement.
- California residents: we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. You may make the requests above regardless of where you live, and we will not treat you differently for doing so.
Cookies
Our site uses only the cookies needed for it to work and, where enabled, basic privacy-respecting analytics. Embedded tools such as Calendly may set their own cookies when you use them. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings.
Do Not Track signals and third-party tracking
Some browsers let you send a “Do Not Track” signal or a Global Privacy Control signal. Our site does not track visitors across other websites over time, so it does not respond differently to these signals.
We do not allow advertising networks or other third parties to collect information about your online activity on our site over time or across other websites. The only exception is an embedded tool you choose to use, such as Calendly when you book a call, which may collect information under its own privacy policy.
Children
Our website and services are intended for businesses and adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed. Material changes will be posted on this page.
