ʻŌlelo Hoʻohiki: Keeping Our Word on Fees, Deadlines and Results

ʻŌlelo hoʻohiki is a solemn promise. In a CFO engagement, it shows up as fixed fees, kept deadlines and doing what we said we would.

My firm serves clients in California, Texas and Hawaiʻi, and I split my time between Fresno and Kailua-Kona. A few Hawaiian values shape how my team and I work with every client, wherever they are. One of them is ʻōlelo hoʻohiki: a solemn promise, a word given and kept.

Fixed fees are a promise

Most of our CFO and accounting clients pay a fixed monthly fee: small business plans from $350 to $2,500 a month, and CFO and controller retainers from $3,000 to $10,000 a month, depending on scope. Tax returns are quoted at a fixed price, in writing, before work begins. If the scope changes, such as an acquisition, a new entity or a capital raise, we discuss it and agree on it first.

A fixed fee isn’t just a billing convenience. It means the CEO can call with a question without wondering what the call will cost, and it keeps our incentives aligned with yours.

Deadlines are a promise

Month-end close dates, lender compliance certificates, board packages and tax filing deadlines are commitments to people outside your company. Missing one costs credibility with a bank or an investor. We plan backward from those dates and raise issues early.

Results are a promise

When we agree on what an engagement will deliver, whether that is a clean close in a set number of days, a working 13-week cash forecast or a data room ready for diligence, we hold ourselves to it. If something threatens that commitment, you hear about it from us first.

Saying no is part of keeping your word

Keeping promises means not making ones we can’t keep. If a request falls outside our expertise, we say so and help you find the right advisor.

If you want a finance partner whose word you can plan around, book a 30-minute call.
